Metal Roofing in Markham

Roof Experts installed a 0.8mm aluminum standing seam roof with aluminum tubular snow guards and solar panel preparation on a residential property in Markham, Ontario. The homeowner specifically requested aluminum — and made two smart decisions upfront: snow guards at time of roofing, and a layout that accommodates future solar panels.

This project demonstrates the correct material logic: aluminum roof panels paired with aluminum snow guard clamps. No mixed metals, no galvanic corrosion risk at the contact points.

Why aluminum standing seam

Aluminum standing seam is a premium roofing material — lighter than steel, naturally corrosion-resistant, and does not require a painted coating for protection. At 0.8mm thickness, aluminum panels provide excellent rigidity and a clean, flat panel surface with no oil-canning.

  • 0.8mm aluminum — premium thickness, superior rigidity
  • Natural corrosion resistance — no paint required for protection
  • Lighter than steel — reduced structural load
  • Concealed fastener system — no exposed screws, 50+ year lifespan
  • Compatible with solar panel mounting systems

Snow guards — aluminum on aluminum

For this project we installed aluminum tubular snow guards — not steel. This is the correct material choice for an aluminum roof. When steel clamps are used on aluminum panels, galvanic corrosion develops at the contact point over time, degrading both the guard and the panel surface.

Aluminum-on-aluminum contact eliminates this risk entirely. Same metal, no electrochemical reaction, no corrosion.

Snow guards were installed at time of roofing — the most cost-effective and least disruptive approach. Markham ground snow load reaches 1.4–1.8 kPa per NBC 2020. Without retention, snow sliding off a standing seam roof lands directly on whatever is below — walkways, parked cars, landscaping, and in this case, the solar panel investment.

Snow guards and solar panels — why both matter

The homeowner planned to install solar panels on this roof. This makes snow retention even more critical — for two reasons.

First, solar panels themselves act as a dam for snow accumulation above them. Snow builds up on the roof slope above the panels, then releases suddenly as a single large mass — with more force than a bare roof slope would produce.

Second, a snow slide off a roof with solar panels can take the panels with it, or damage the mounting system, wiring, and the panels themselves. A properly engineered snow retention system installed below the panel array protects the entire solar investment.

We work with solar installers across Ontario on combined roof and snow retention projects. If you are planning solar panels on a metal roof — contact us before the solar installation to coordinate snow guard placement.
